Why This Website Was Created

The National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) established this website to help civil legal aid programs and other equal justice advocates find additional funding to support their efforts to provide legal aid to families and individuals.

Diversifying an organization’s funding base is essential to its long-term financial health. Ideally a legal aid program would have at least some funding from the following sources:

  • Federal government grants
  • State and local government grants
  • Interest on Lawyers’ Trust Accounts (IOLTA)
  • Court filing fees
  • Foundation grants
  • Corporate gifts (i.e., from law firms or major industry in your area, often as sponsorships of an event)
  • Major gifts (large donations from individuals)
  • Individual giving
  • Other (Cy Pres awards, special dedicated funding, one-time awards, etc.)

This site initially is focusing on a variety of federal government grants that can be used to support civil legal aid. We will later add additional funding and grant information. We invite you to browse the site. Hopefully, you will find useful information that can be applied in a practical manner to expand funding for civil legal aid.

If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to email Chuck Greenfield at c.greenfield@nlada.org.
