HHS – Social Services Block Grant Program (2014)

Description:

Social Services Block Grants (SSBG) enables each state or territory to meet the needs of its residents through locally relevant social services. SSBGs support programs that allow communities to achieve or maintain economic self-sufficiency to prevent, reduce or eliminate dependency on social services.

SSBGs fund a variety of initiatives for children and adults including:

  • Daycare
  • Protective services
  • Special services to persons with disabilities
  • Adoption
  • Case management
  • Health related services
  • Transportation
  • Foster care
  • Substance abuse
  • Housing
  • Home-delivered meals
  • Independent/transitional living
  • Employment services

Each state determines which services to provide and who is eligible to receive these services. SSBG funds are allocated to the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and the Territories of Guam, American Samoa, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Eligible Applicants: State governments. Every state is eligible for funds and is already receiving funds. States determine the eligibility of programs within that state.
